Japan Market Entry

Case Overview

A global manufacturer of sports and outdoor equipment, operating in more than 70 countries, was preparing to enter the Japanese market. While the company already had an established global brand and product portfolio, its existing messaging did not always work in the same way in Japan.

We helped adapt its communications, product content, and digital presence for Japanese audiences, while also translating official documents for its foreign employees’ visa applications in Japan.

The Brief

The client initially approached us to quickly translate product content and materials for its upcoming launch in Japan.

As the project developed, it became clear that entering a market with established local competitors required more than translating the existing content. The company needed to understand how to present its products in a way that would appeal to Japanese customers, address their real-world needs, and build trust.

The project therefore involved several interconnected needs:

Our Approach

We began by looking beyond the individual translation requests to understand what the company was trying to achieve in Japan.

Rather than treating the existing English content as a fixed source text, we considered how the message, product positioning, and overall brand presentation would be understood by Japanese customers.

Understand the Market

We reviewed the content from a Japanese customer’s perspective, identifying where direct translation could sound unnatural or fail to convey the intended value.

Adapt the Brand

We adapted product and marketing content to reflect Japanese tone, cultural expectations, and visual preferences while maintaining the global brand identity.

Optimize for Local Search

We considered how Japanese customers search for and evaluate sports equipment, adapting keywords and content to match local search behavior.

Look Beyond Language

We provided recommendations on visual presentation and other cultural considerations that could affect how the brand and products were perceived in Japan.

Support Market Entry

We also translated official documents required for foreign employees’ visa applications, supporting the company’s wider setup in Japan.

Keep the Brand Consistent

We ensured that the Japanese content remained aligned with the company’s global brand while adapting the language and presentation for the Japanese market.

The Results

The client was able to enter the Japanese market with communication that stayed true to its global brand while feeling more natural and relevant to Japanese audiences.

By addressing language, search behavior, and cultural expectations together, we helped the company build a stronger foundation for its Japanese market presence and position itself alongside local competitors.

Most importantly, the project shifted the focus from simply translating content to understanding how the brand needed to communicate in Japan.
