Enriching Travel in Japan

Case Overview

Across a series of tourism projects in rural Japan, we helped local organizations and businesses identify what made their destinations worth discovering and communicate it effectively to international visitors. Our work combined an understanding of local culture and authenticity with insight into what resonates with travelers from overseas.

The Brief

Many regional destinations and businesses had something genuinely valuable to offer international visitors, but struggled to explain what made it special in ways that felt natural and compelling to people from overseas. Existing translations often focused on transferring words rather than communicating the experience, while local teams were not always aware of how their messages might be perceived by foreign visitors.

The challenge was therefore not simply to translate tourism content, but to understand what each destination had to offer, how local people saw it, and what would make an international visitor choose it over Japan’s better-known destinations.

Our Approach

We started with what was genuinely valuable about each place, then looked at it from the perspective of someone discovering Japan for the first time. By combining local understanding with an international viewpoint, we helped turn authentic local experiences into something visitors could immediately understand and appreciate.

Start with the Local Story

We first looked at what each destination, business, or experience genuinely offered, from local traditions and food, to landscapes, hospitality, and the stories behind them.

Think Like a Visitor

We considered what might attract, surprise, or interest travelers from overseas—and what might be obvious to locals but need more context for an international audience.

Look Beyond Language

We considered how the message would be perceived by an international audience, adapting wording and presentation while preserving its Japanese character.

Make Authenticity Accessible

We helped communicate what made each place distinctive without making it feel generic. The goal was to make local experiences accessible and appealing to overseas travelers.

Fresh Perspective

Through research, field visits, and conversations with local stakeholders, we helped teams reconsider their offerings from the perspective of international visitors.

Show More of Japan

We helped highlight destinations and experiences beyond the usual tourist routes, giving visitors more opportunities to discover a local side of Japan.

The Results

Our work helped regional destinations and businesses recognize what would make their offerings meaningful and appealing to visitors from overseas, and communicate those strengths with greater clarity, confidence, and authenticity.

By combining local knowledge with an international perspective, we helped local teams see their offerings from a visitor’s point of view—from how a traditional product could fit into everyday life abroad to how a hands-on cultural experience could be presented to someone discovering it for the first time.

The result was communication that felt less like a translation and more like an invitation, giving international visitors a reason to look beyond Japan’s best-known destinations and discover places, products, and experiences they might otherwise have overlooked.
